THCa vs DELTA-8 vs DELTA-9 vs HHC

They differ in strength, character and legal footing. They do not differ in what a urine screen sees, and no one selling them should let you believe otherwise.

THCa — the one that's really delta-9
THCA is the acid form the plant actually produces. It isn't intoxicating in the jar because a carboxyl group blocks receptor binding. Apply heat and that group leaves, converting roughly 87.7% of the THCA weight into delta-9 THC.
Which makes THCa flower a legal category rather than a distinct experience: it's sold as hemp on its low delta-9 content, and it delivers delta-9 once you light it. A 30% THCa flower smokes like 26% THC cannabis, because that's what it becomes. The full arithmetic is here.
Suits you if you want actual flower — terpenes, cultivars, the ritual — and you're comfortable with full-strength effects.
Delta-8 — the gentler one
Chemically almost delta-9: the double bond sits on the eighth carbon instead of the ninth. That tiny difference lowers binding affinity and, by most reports, produces something around half to two-thirds the intensity with noticeably less of the anxious, racing quality some people get from delta-9.
It occurs naturally only in trace amounts, so commercial delta-8 is converted from CBD in a lab. That conversion is why several states name it specifically in prohibition statutes — "synthetically derived" is the phrase that does the work — and why it's banned in more places than low-dose delta-9 is.
Suits you if you want a functional, level effect, or delta-9 has been too much for you before. Also the pragmatic choice in Texas, Kentucky and Alabama, where gummies ship and smokables don't.
Delta-9 — the reference point
The cannabinoid everyone means by "THC." In hemp it's sold at low milligram doses in edibles, because the 0.3% dry-weight limit still allows meaningful amounts in a heavy product — a 10 mg gummy can be federally compliant hemp by weight.
Sharper onset, more cerebral, and the most likely of the four to tip into anxiety at a high dose. Also the most predictable, because it's the one everything else is measured against.
Suits you if you know what dispensary edibles do to you and want the same thing at a known dose. 10 mg is a real dose — start at half.
HHC — the stable one
Hexahydrocannabinol: THC with hydrogen added across the double bond. Removing that bond makes the molecule considerably more resistant to heat, light and oxidation, so HHC products keep better than THC ones.
Effects generally land between delta-8 and delta-9 — often described as around 70–80% of delta-9, with a warmer character. Reporting is thinner than for the others simply because it's newer, so treat the range as approximate.
Regulatory position mirrors delta-8: produced synthetically from hemp precursors, and usually named alongside delta-8 wherever delta-8 is banned.
Suits you if you want something between the two, or you're buying a cart that'll sit in a drawer for months.
Where they're identical
Two things, and both matter more than the differences above.
Drug tests. All four metabolise into THC-COOH. That's the compound a standard urine screen detects, and the immunoassay can't tell which cannabinoid produced it. Delta-8 being milder does not make it safer to test on. The full page on this is the one we'd most like tested people to read.
Driving. All four impair. Impaired-driving law doesn't care which one, and neither does a roadside test. Same rule for all of them.
And after November
The 12 November 2026 rule change flattens most of this distinction. A total-THC standard plus a 0.4 mg per-container cap removes high-potency products across all four cannabinoids — the differences between them stop mattering when none of them clears the threshold.
Which is worth knowing before you develop a strong preference. If there's one you already rely on, this is the year to find out.
