FIRST TIME WITH THCa FLOWER: START HERE
Buy something in the mid twenties, take two small puffs, wait ten minutes.
That's the entire guide. Everything below is why, plus the one mistake that accounts for nearly every bad first experience.
We'd rather sell you a $19.99 3.5 g of something moderate that you enjoy than a $34.99 exotic that puts you off the category. This page exists because the second outcome loses us a customer for good.
What THCa flower actually is
It's cannabis. Grown, cured and sold as hemp because its delta-9 THC content is under 0.3% by dry weight, which is the federal line. What it does carry is THCA — the acid form, non-intoxicating in the jar.
Light it and heat converts about 87.7% of that THCA into delta-9 THC. So a 28% THCa flower smokes at roughly 24% delta-9, which is ordinary dispensary strength. The full maths is here.
Plainly: this is not a mild novelty product. Anyone telling you THCa flower is "hemp, so it's basically CBD" is either confused or selling something.
What to buy first
Strain type — indica, sativa, hybrid — matters less than the internet suggests, and terpene content matters more. If you want a rule of thumb: sativa-leaning earlier in the day, indica-leaning in the evening, and don't overthink it the first time.
The first session, step by step
- Somewhere familiar, with time to spare. Your own place, an evening with nothing after it. Not before driving, not at an event, not somewhere you'd need to perform.
- Someone else around if possible. Not supervision — just easier company than being alone and slightly unsure.
- Two small puffs. Then stop. Not a full preroll. Not "a normal amount." Two.
- Wait ten minutes. Inhaled effects arrive in two to ten minutes and keep building for about thirty. Ten minutes tells you where you're heading.
- Then decide. One more puff, or none. Most first-timers are done at two or three.
- Water and a snack nearby. Dry mouth is universal and appetite is likely.
The mistake almost everyone makes
Twenty minutes in, feeling something mild, you conclude it isn't strong and take four more puffs. Those land on top of the first two, which hadn't finished arriving.
Effects from the first inhale are still climbing at the thirty-minute mark. So the third round doesn't add to a plateau — it stacks on a rising curve. That's the mechanism behind essentially every "I had way too much my first time" story, and it's entirely avoidable by waiting ten minutes between puffs.
Under-doing your first session costs you one uneventful evening. Over-doing it can put you off cannabis for years. The asymmetry is enormous.
What it feels like, and how long
- 2–10 minutes: onset. Body loosens, sounds and colours slightly sharper.
- 15–30 minutes: peak. Where you are now is where you're going to be.
- 1–2 hours: the plateau, easing gradually.
- 2–3 hours: mostly done. Possibly tired, possibly hungry.
Common and normal: dry mouth, red eyes, appetite, time feeling stretched, finding things funnier than they are. Also possible: a racing heart or self-conscious anxiety, especially if you've had too much. Unpleasant, not dangerous, and it fades — sit down, breathe slowly, and let it pass. More on riding one out here.
Two things to settle before you order
Are you drug tested? Then don't buy this at all. THCa metabolises into exactly what a standard screen detects, and hemp origin is no defence. We wrote the whole page on it and it costs us orders every month.
Can it reach you? Smokable hemp is banned in more states than edibles are — Texas, Kentucky and Alabama among them. Check your state before you get attached to a cultivar.
One 3.5 g of something in the mid twenties, or a single 33.8% preroll if you'd rather not commit. Under $20 either way, and enough to find out whether this is for you.
Onset and duration ranges reflect commonly reported effects and vary by person. Reviewed 31 July 2026. Not medical advice — 21+ only, and never before driving.
